A Borough Built Around the House
Spray foam insulation in Staten Island means working on houses more than apartments. Wikipedia's figures for the borough count about 181,199 housing units with a 69.5% owner-occupancy rate, the highest of New York City's five boroughs. Owners who plan to stay tend to fix comfort problems for good rather than patch them, and most of the work we do here is in one- and two-family houses, attached townhouses and the occasional older frame house converted to apartments.
Most houses here came after 1960
Staten Island's population doubled from 221,991 in 1960 to 443,728 in 2000, and Wikipedia ties that growth to the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and the other bridges that opened the island to development from the 1960s onward. By the 2020 census the borough had 495,747 residents. That growth means the typical house is a ranch, raised ranch, split-level, colonial or townhouse from the 1960s through the 1990s, built under energy rules far looser than today's. Common gaps we find are attics with a few inches of old batts, bare rim joists, uninsulated rooms over attached garages and leaky kneewalls.
Older houses on the North Shore
The northern neighborhoods are older. St. George, Stapleton, Port Richmond and West Brighton were settled in the 1800s and hold Victorian and early 20th century frame houses, many with balloon framing and empty exterior walls. Those houses need the wall cavities sealed and filled, the tops and bottoms of framing bays blocked, and attics air sealed before any depth is added.
Hills, shore and everything between
The island rises to the summit of Todt Hill at 401 feet, the highest natural point in the five boroughs, and drops to beaches and salt marsh on the East and South Shore. Houses on the high ground mainly deal with heat and wind exposure. Houses near the water deal with damp crawl spaces, flooding and salt air as well. In Hurricane Sandy, at least 21 people on Staten Island died from the storm surge, according to Wikipedia's account of the storm in New York. We ask about flood history on every lower-level job.
Code and climate
The 2025 New York City Energy Conservation Code uses Climate Zone 4A for the entire city, with R-49 for ceilings and R-15 continuous for basement walls among its requirements. Central Park's 1991-2020 normals show a January mean of 33.7F and a July mean of 77.5F with humid summers, which is the climate we insulate for on both ends of the year.

Staten Island Questions
Do most Staten Island houses need more insulation?
Most built before the 1990s fall short of today's code somewhere, usually in the attic and at the rim joist. Newer houses tend to be better but often have weak spots over garages and around attic hatches. We check before recommending anything.
Is spray foam common in Staten Island homes?
It is common in renovations, rebuilt lower levels and rim joists. On open attic floors, blown-in insulation over air sealing is often the better value.
Do you work in every neighborhood?
Yes, from St. George and Port Richmond on the North Shore to Tottenville at the southern tip. Call (646) 461-2857 to set a visit.
