When Old Insulation Has to Go
Insulation removal and replacement makes sense when the old material is causing problems, not just underperforming. On Staten Island that often means batts that hung in a damp crawl space for years, attic insulation soiled by rodents or birds, or insulation in walls and lower levels that got wet in a flood. We remove what needs to go, deal with the cause where we can, and install new insulation that suits the space.
Signs it needs to come out
Insulation that is wet, sagging or falling out of a crawl space ceiling. A musty or ammonia smell in the attic. Droppings, nests or tunnels in the insulation. Dark staining that shows air has been filtering through it for years. Mold on the insulation or framing. Old insulation that blocks access to air leaks that need sealing. Dry, clean insulation can usually stay, and we will tell you if that is the case.
Flood-damaged insulation
Insulation that has been under water does not dry out well and can hold contaminants from floodwater. After Hurricane Sandy, many houses near the shore had walls and lower levels opened and stripped. If water has reached your insulation, from a storm, a burst pipe or a leaking roof, it should come out, and the framing should dry before anything new goes in. Below the base flood elevation in a mapped flood zone, FEMA's Technical Bulletin 2 limits replacement materials to Class 4 and Class 5 flood damage-resistant materials, so we check the rules before choosing.
How removal works
For attics, we usually vacuum loose fill out through a large hose to a collection bag or truck, which keeps the mess out of the living space. Batts are bagged by hand. We cover floors and seal off the hatch area inside the house. Once the space is clear, we check the framing and sheathing, then seal air leaks that were hidden under the old material.
Vermiculite and asbestos
Vermiculite is a pebbly, gray-brown or gold loose fill found in some older attics and walls. Some of it contains asbestos. It should be tested before anyone disturbs it, and if it contains asbestos, removal is a job for a licensed abatement contractor. HomeAdvisor lists asbestos removal at $1,190 to $3,255. If we see vermiculite, we stop and tell you.
Removing spray foam
Spray foam is sometimes removed when it was installed badly, has an odor problem, or covers damage that needs repair. It has to be cut or scraped off, which costs more than removing loose fill. HomeGuide lists foam removal at $1.00 to $2.50 per square foot, and Fixr notes hand-chipping can run up to about $5.
Then replace it right
After removal, we seal the gaps and insulate to a real target, whether that is R-49 on an attic floor under the 2025 NYC Energy Conservation Code or closed-cell foam on crawl space walls. Get a free estimate

Insulation Removal & Replacement Questions
Does old insulation always need to be removed?
No. Dry, clean insulation can stay and be topped up. Removal is for material that is wet, moldy, contaminated, or in the way of air sealing.
Our basement flooded. Does the insulation have to go?
Insulation that sat in floodwater should come out, and the framing should dry before anything new goes in. Below the flood elevation, replacement materials have to be flood damage-resistant.
What if the attic has vermiculite?
It should be tested for asbestos before it is touched. If it contains asbestos, a licensed abatement contractor removes it. We stop and let you know if we see it.
